I remember last fall packing up to go to Liberty University’s College for a Weekend. For as long as I could remember, I had planned on going to Liberty University to earn my bachelor’s degree in elementary education. But for some reason, I just wasn’t excited anymore. I did not have a passion for it and it just didn’t feel right.
But I went anyway. And just to clear some things up, I was more unsettled about teaching than actually going to LU. I figured I would enjoy the college if I only found something that I loved to do.
While I was there at LU, attending classes and staying with a student there, I just knew that the college was not for me. I left early, and I really have no regrets. I had no peace. LU is an amazing college, but I felt God was telling me that it was not the one I was going to attend.
So I began to search for other options. Like I mentioned before, I didn’t want to be a teacher anymore! An internship or long-term missions trip sounded so fun and freeing! I applied to many different places. But nothing was working out. I then began looking into other majors and colleges.
I had wanted to be a teacher my whole life, but now I was questioning it and my whole world felt turned upside down.
You know something, though? This whole time I did my best at trusting God. Yeah, I freaked out a few times because I didn’t know what I was going to do with my life, but overall I tried to trust God. I knew that God would fulfill His purpose for me (Psalm 138:8) and that He would reveal His plan in His timing, probably a little at a time.
Eventually God introduced me to a small Christian college about 45 minutes from where I live. I prayed so much about it, and I remember one night I just knew that is where I was supposed to go. And guess what my major is? Elementary education. God revealed that to me as well, and I’m excited now!
I know that I was meant to be a teacher. God revealed that to me early on in my life. But I honestly am glad that I searched for other options, while trusting God. Now when hard times come in school or as a teacher, I’ll know for sure it’s what I am supposed to do. Not just what I thought I was supposed to do!
I know, it’s not always easy to trust God, is it? It can be so difficult, especially when you feel the pressure to plan for something coming up.
But God is always on time in His guidance. He is never early and never too late. He will fulfill His purpose for you!
So today I wanted to give you 5 ways that you can trust God with your life! This is what I did while trusting God with my college future, but it can fit for any situation you may be facing in your life!

How to Trust God
1. Remember His promises
I highly encourage you to look up God’s promises in the Bible. It is so helpful in trusting Him! Promises like the one that I mentioned above, He will fulfill His purpose for you, help to keep you focused on the fact that He will guide you.
Write them down on notecards and keep them in places where you can see them! His Word is full of promises and He will never break a single one.
2. Recall His past faithfulness
Honestly, this is what helps me SO much! Remembering what He has done for me in the past and how He has guided me helps me to trust Him for His future guidance. Here are a few things that He has done for me. They may seem small to you, but they meant the world to me!
- He guided me through driver’s ed and getting my license, which I was so nervous about!
- He helped me to find a job. You can read that story here.
- He helped me to find the perfect car for me.
- He’s been guiding me through food allergies and sensitivities and never left my side!
How has He been faithful to you in the past? Those things can help you trust Him with your future!
3. Pray
This may be the most important way to trust God with your future! Communicate your thoughts, hopes, fears, and anything else you need to tell Him. Nothing surprises Him and He loves communicating with you.
Tell Him you trust Him and ask Him to guide you. Praying will give you so much peace!
4. Be excited about the future!
Please don’t stumble along while trusting God, thinking you won’t like what He is going to give you or where He is going to guide you. Yes, it may not be super glamorous or your first pick, but He has a plan. It’s a part of the larger plan God has for His children and the world!
So be excited! Have a great, joyful attitude about your future. And when He guides you and reveals His plan for you, be thankful! Make the most out of every situation and live for His glory.
5. Never give up hope
Don’t doubt that God will guide you and give you what you need. Follow the steps above and never give up hope! Trust Him with all of your heart (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Wait hopefully and expectantly!
I hope this helps you to trust God with your future! Trusting God can be difficult, but it is so helpful and so important. God wants to guide you.
I’ve found that when God does guide me or gives me something that I need, I enjoy it a whole lot more when I’ve been trusting God, instead of complaining and worrying.
What are you trusting God for right now? How do you trust Him? I’d love to hear in the comments!
