As Christian girls, we all look up to the Proverbs 31 woman, don’t we? She is like the “perfect” godly woman that we all aspire to be. But she also discourages us, doesn’t she? We feel like we cannot live up to the high standards that she sets. Today I wanted to walk you through what the modern Proverbs 31 woman really woman looks like!
But first, let’s clear some things up.
A heart that is seeking after the Lord is the most important thing. Many of these attributes are only attainable if you truly are spending time with Jesus and digging into His Word. So chase after God!
Please remember that nobody is perfect. Don’t compare yourself to anybody else, not even the Proverbs 31 woman. She is a great guide, but comparison is the thief of joy! However, seek to honor God with your life. This means doing your best to be the woman He created you to be!
Grace, not perfection. Give yourself grace when you mess up or don’t measure up. Don’t let yourself stay down though! Just don’t beat yourself up. God is a God of second chances.
Alright, so now let’s go verse by verse and really see what the modern day Proverbs 31 woman looks like! First I’ll share what the verse means, and then I’ll add some modern day applications.
The passage is a bit long, so I’m going to split this up into 2 separate posts. Stay tuned next week for the second part!

The Proverbs 31 Woman Today
“Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. The heart of her husband safely trusts her; so he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil all the days of her life.”
As a wife, a Proverbs 31 woman lives in such a way that her husband trusts her. He doesn’t fear that she will leave him because she expresses her love and faithfulness.
She serves him selflessly, not reserving any of her love or affection. She wouldn’t do anything to harm him. As we’ll discuss later, the Proverbs 31 woman makes the home a haven and place for growth. All the days of her life!
I know many of us are single. It seems that this doesn’t pertain to us, but I truly think it does. Learning about being a godly wife is great preparation for if God has marriage in store for us!
Modern Day Application: Give your husband every reason to trust in you. Love him and be a safe haven for him. Single girls, prepare to love your husband well.

“She seeks wool and flax, and willingly works with her hands. She is like the merchant ships, she brings her food from afar.”
The Proverbs 31 woman is practical and frugal. Working with her hands is not a foreign concept. She does not make other people do things for her.
She likes to get the best deal and save money where she can. If that means importing goods, that’s what she’ll do.
Modern Day Application: Be hard working and do your best at whatever you do. Also, learn to be good with your money. Make a budget and save where you can!
“She also rises while it is yet night, and provides food for her household, and a portion for her maidservants. She considers a field and buys it; from her profits she plants a vineyard.”
Do you get the theme here? The Proverbs 31 woman is hard-working!
She cooks nourishing meals for herself, her family, and any servants or house guests. She doesn’t sleep in every morning and let those in her house fend for themselves.
Oh, and she’s a good investor. But she doesn’t just frivolously spend her earnings, but again invests. She is wise with money!
Modern Day Application: If you are married, provide nourishing meals for your family. If you aren’t, practice by cooking for your family and friends, and also yourself! Invest your money wisely.
“She girds herself with strength, and strengthens her arms.”
I feel like this one goes both ways – spiritually and physically. The Proverbs 31 woman spends time with Jesus, which gives her strength. I believe she also takes care of her body, strengthening it so that she can do all that God has called her to do.
Modern Day Application: Spend time with Jesus to strengthen your faith! Also, take care of yourself so that you can carry out God’s plan for you.

“She perceives that her merchandise is good, and her lamp does not go out by night. She stretches out her hands to the distaff, and her hand holds the spindle.”
The Proverbs 31 woman makes things herself whenever she can. She works hard at it and it satisfies her to see her hard work pay off.
Oh, and I do not think that these verses mean that she never sleeps. God created us to need sleep and rest! I think that it just implies that she works hard all day.
Modern Day Application: Work hard y’all! Make things that have value to you and will benefit you and others.
“She extends her hand to the poor, yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy.”
One of my favorite parts! The Proverbs 31 woman helps to provide for those that do not have enough. You know the extra money she made from her investments? This is one way she uses that money!
Modern Day Application: Help the poor. Today, that could be through buying a meal for the homeless, sponsoring a child through Compassion, or volunteering at a homeless shelter. There are many ways!
“She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household is clothed with scarlet. She makes tapestry for herself; her clothing is fine linen and purple.”
The Proverbs 31 woman prepares well for each season. She invests in clothes that will last and makes sure she, her kids, and her husband have what they need.
Modern Day Application: Prepare you and your family (if you have one!) for the coming seasons. Invest in some good quality pieces that will last for a while.
See, the Proverbs 31 is not boring and passive! She is confident and hard-working. She loves Jesus with all of her heart, soul, mind, and strength!

It is so true that comparison is the thief of joy, even when comparing yourself to a Godly standard. The good news is we don’t have to try to be this impossible woman in our own strength but Jesus gives us the power to become her when we draw on His Spirit.
Yes!! Totally agree. Thanks for commenting!
I absolutely love this, Allison! So much truth. I especially like what you said about how she girds herself with strength physically AND spiritually. I never really thought about it that way before! 💛
